16-Valve, Single Overhead Cam Engine
With its increased 1.8 litre capacity and single overhead camshaft design, the new F90 delivers improved acceleration and power-to-weight performance over its predecessor.
This is combined with Yamaha’s latest four-stroke technology, including advanced intake and exhaust system and unique multi-point Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI).
Multi-Point Electronic Fuel Injection
The Multi-Point Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) system, in conjunction with the Engine Control Module (ECM), injects the right amount of fuel into the combustion chamber at the optimum timing.
This system takes into account engine speed and load requirements to achieve maximum engine performance including ‘first-time, every-time’ hot and cold starting, improved fuel efficiency, excellent throttle response, clean and efficient combustion and lower exhaust emissions.
Offset Crankshaft
The crankshaft design is offset 5mm from the centre of the cylinder for a more efficient transfer of power to the crankshaft.
Shift Dampener System
Yamaha’s Shift Dampener System (SDS) built into selected Yamaha propellers, delivers smooth and quiet operation when shifting in and out of gear by absorbing the force that is created. Yamaha offers a wide range of cutting edge alloy and stainless steel prop options to suit all engine sizes and requirements.
81MM Cylinder Bore
The cylinder bore size has been increased from 79mm to 81mm which provides more engine torque. A larger valve has been used for increased transfer efficiency for both intake and exhaust.
Single Bore Throttle Body
The 60mm size single bore throttle minimizes intake resistance and provides first-rate response for acceleration and high speed operation.
Variable Trolling Control
Yamaha’s variable trolling control allows the skipper to precisely adjust the engine’s idling speed from 550 to 1000 RPM in 50 RPM increments. The ability to finely tune the trolling speed allows fisherman to perfect their lure presentation when chasing different species of fish.
Digital Network Gauges Compatibility
The F90 is compatible with Yamaha's Digital Network Gauges (Command Link), giving you the information needed to maximise engine performance and efficiency, including a Multifunction Tachometer with RPM, Hours Run, Trim Angle, Oil Pressure, Warning lamps and Variable RPM control - and a Speed/Fuel Management Gauge with Speed, Tank Capacity and Fuel Economy.
The engine is also NMEA2000 compatible allowing the F90 to share information with third party multi-function displays, GPS and fish finders.
ECM Micro-Computer Control
The F90 engine is controlled by an advanced microprocessor Engine Control Unit (ECU), which receives inputs from six major sensors located throughout the engine. This information is used to ensure the engine runs at peak performance, by delivering the right fuel/air mixture to each combustion chamber.
The ECM also detects any oil pressure, overheating or other operating issues.
High Output Alternator
A 12V 35A high-output alternator ensures that power is always available to start the engine, even after long periods of idling or running at low revs. This not only provides extra starting power, but delivers sufficient power to run the wide array of on-board electronic devices used in modern boating.
Single Ram Power, Trim and Tilt Unit
The compact and light-weight single ram power, trim and tilt (PTT) unit and bracket have been developed exclusively for this engine. An optional tilt limiter can be fitted to stop the engine hitting fixed objects such as bait boards and other objects.
Prime Start™ (Electric Start)
Exclusive to Yamaha, Prime Start™ makes starting a Yamaha outboard as easy as starting a car. It allows the engine to be started cold by automatically controlling the engine ‘warming up’ process - eliminating the need for a conventional choke.
With Prime Start™ you no longer need to ‘warm up’ your engine by revving it in neutral.
Remote Control Security System (Optional)
Yamaha's Customer Outboard Protection (Y-COP) engine immobiliser system is easy to use and highly effective in stopping unauthorised start-ups when your boat is unattended.
Simply push the button on the neat and simple remote to lock and unlock the engine. Available for both mechanical steering and tiller options.
Start-In-Gear Protection
Yamaha’s Start-in-gear Protection stops the engine from being accidentally started in-gear. If the engine is not in neutral, the starter will either be locked for pull start models or the power supply isolated for electric start models.
Tilt Limiting Switch (Optional)
This optional device will help stop damage caused by your engine being tilted too high and hitting fixed objects such as bait boards and other boating accessories, when using the power, trim and tilt.
Fresh Water Flushing System
Simply connect a hose to the easy access connector to flush salt and dirt from the outboard without having to run the engine. Flushing the engine after each usage reduces corrosion and extends the engines life and resale value.
One-Piece Cowling
This engine features a new outer cowling design with an intake air drain system, to easily and efficiently drain away any water that enters the cowling during normal engine operation. Incoming air is routed through a labyrinth of passages that help trap and drain water before it enters the engine’s intake, for maximum reliability.
Single Action Steering Friction Adjustment (Tiller Option Only)
Steering friction can easily be adjusted while out on the water, providing great stability and control, even at higher speeds.
Vapour Reduction Fuel Return and Vapour Burning Systems
This engine derives every bit of power available from the fuel by using Vapour Reduction and Vapour Burning Systems. By eliminating vapour from the fuel rail and re-routing it back to the Vapour Separator Tank, the optimum fuel mixture is injected in the cylinders for better combustion and power.
A fuel vapour valve prevents fuel vapours from escaping to the atmosphere when the outboard is not running, and re-routes fuel vapours through the intake when the outboard is running. This helps achieve maximum fuel efficiency and minimises emissions.
Labyrinth Exhaust System
Yamaha’s proven labyrinth exhaust system reduces engine noise at low RPM and idle. A water sealed outer wall around the exhaust muffler effectively reduces exhaust tone for
whisper quiet operation.
Over Rev Limiter
Acts automatically to stop over-revving which can be caused by cavitation and other means - helping to prevent damage to the engine.
Large Water Separator with Water Sensor
This easily accessible water filter separates water and contaminants from the fuel before they reach the fuel injectors for reliability and durability.
Long Span Mounting System
The large rubber mounts and the long vertical length between the upper and lower mounts help to reduce engine vibration.
Long Intake Manifold
The long intake manifold increases torque at low speeds for better acceleration.
Advance Warning Systems
Yamaha’s engines are renowned for their reliability, however, should a fault occur, you can feel safe in the knowledge that back-up systems are in place.
Yamaha’s advanced warning system provides clear audio/visual warning alerts for oil pressure, engine temperature and other key variables.
If a fault occurs, the engine RPMs will automatically reduce to help protect the engine and allow the vessel to slowly make its way back to shore.
Anti-Corrosion - 5 Stage Paint System
Yamaha engines are known for their durability and high re-sale value. Part of this lies in the anti-corrosion protection.
A unique YDC-30 aluminium alloy protects the engine's exterior parts, while a zinc coating, high-quality stainless steel, and 5-stage exterior paint coating offers long-lasting protection - inside and out.
